Retail giant, Game, has been accused by a shopper of refusing to accept the money he wanted to use to pay for some drinks he purchased at one of their shops.
According to the customer who mentioned his name as Godwin, the teller and the manager of the Game shop refused acceptance of his GH¢200 note with which he was paying for some drinks he has lined up at the checkout point.
He was displeased with the decision of the Game employees since the note is a legal tender in the country.
“I am buying from Game and I am paying with Ghana’s money, legal tender GH¢200. The manager here says he is not going to take the money, the teller here says she is not going to take the money. As you can see everybody is here present and nobody is going to take my money which I did not manufacture, which is Ghana’s legal tender to pay for my drinks.” He lamented in a 26 seconds video sighted by GhanaWeb.com.
Game is yet to give reasons for the stance of its employees.
In November, the Bank of Ghana introduced what will be the country’s highest denominations in GH¢200 and GH¢100 notes as well as a GH¢2 coin.
In defense of this move, the Governor of the Central Bank, Mr Thomas Addison said it was a well thought out move which is aimed at aligning the cedi denominations with the needs of the Ghanaians people. The governor also sited convenience as one of the reasons for the introduction of the new denominations.
But critics of the Central Bank’s action predicted that the new denominations among other things was going to be a source of inconvenience for Ghanaians in their daily transactions.
