About 20 trucks full of garbage have been parked at the head office of the Accra Metropolitan Authority (AMA) located in the heart of Ghana’s capital, Accra. The gabage trucks have been parked since last Friday and are giving off a bad stench, which is creating a lot of discomfort for workers and those living in the area.
The trucks were parked there by the local contractors responsible for collecting and disposing of the garbage after the AMA failed to provide a site for the refuse to be dumped. The contractors accuse the AMA of failing to act on a request for the provision of a permanent dumping site.
The contractors attempted to dump the refuse at the old lanfill site at Mallam, a surburb of Accra but were rebuffed by residents in the area, bent on enforcing a directive by the Environmental Protection Agancy for the landfill site to be closed down due to the health risks it poses.
The chairman of the AMA Garbage Contractors Group, Danny Anang says the garbage trucks will remain parked at offices of AMA unless the authorities provide a new landfill site. Meanwhile residents of Oblogo in Accra, the proposed site for the new landfill site have warned that thay will resist any attempt to establish a landfill site in the area.
