Residents and shop owners around the Odorkor Highway in the Greater Accra Region are complaining about the smelly waste water and plastics that have taken over the frontage of their shops and houses.

According to the residents, efforts to get the authorities to solve the problem for the past three years, have not yielded any results.

The MP for Ablekuma North, Akua Afriyei confirmed that the problem has been persistent, but said a contractor has been hired to work on the drains in the area to solve the problem.

Speaking to Don Kwabena Prah Jnr (The Don) on Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Friday, 5 October 2018, the lawmaker explained that: “This is not a new problem… For nine months now, I’ve been working on the drainage issue; if the residents will speak the truth, the contractors have stated dredging the gutters. The truth is that the water and sand from the top of the area joins the main gutter and this is also a covered gutter choked with sand, dirt and plastics.

“But they have dredged from the police station, that’s Kaneshie First Light, they are still dredging, they have dredged passed Hansonic Junction and, so, I’ll plead with the contractor to speed up work.”

Ms Afriyie expressed optimism that once the drain is dredged all the way to Odorkor Traffic Light, the water will begin to flow.

She bemoaned the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into the drains by the shop owners and residents in the area and advised them to desist from such action.
