Gender ministry reacts to video of man who flogged his wife

The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection has condemned a viral video showing a man, identified as John Odartey Lamptey, physically abusing his wife.

The ministry described the act as “barbaric” and a clear violation of the law.

It emphasised that no one has the right to subject another person to any form of abuse, insisting that such actions are severely punishable.

“The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has taken notice of a disturbing video circulating on social media in which a man reported to be a landlord is seen violently assaulting a woman, alleged to be his wife.

“The Ministry wishes to state that no individual has the right to subject another person to any form of abuse under any circumstances. We strongly condemn this barbaric act in its strongest terms. This act infringes on the victims' rights, and it's highly punishable by law,” the ministry stated in a statement dated November 17, 2025.

According to the statement, the ministry has urged the Ghana Police Service to conduct investigations into the incident and its circumstances.

Eyewitnesses have also been urged to provide details and assist the police with information that could help in the investigations.

“The Minister has also reached out to the Ghana Police Service to ensure that a thorough investigation is conducted and justice is served. We also encourage eyewitnesses with vital information to assist law enforcement agencies immediately,” it indicated.

“Domestic and Sexual Based Violence is a national concern, and therefore, we urge the public to report such incidents as soon as possible. We reaffirm our commitment to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders in ensuring that perpetrators of domestic violence face the full rigors of the law,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, Lamptey has been arrested at his residence in Ofankor, Ga East Municipality, by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on November 17, 2025.
