General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has waded into the internal wrangling in the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), calling for a ceasefire between the new executives and workers at the party’s head office.
There was chaos at NPP’s head office on Monday between new security guards contracted by the current executives and the old guards.
Talking to journalists on the issue on Tuesday, the NDC General Secretary, popularly known as General Mosquito, said the approach of the current executives to change workers at the head office may not be the best.
“There may be several reasons why you may want to change the people you are working with but a political party is not like any ordinary organization,” Mr Asiedu Nketia postulated.
He explained that workers at a political party office wear two hats.
“There are people who are committed towards the success of the political party so in a sense they are volunteers.”
He said such workers must be considered as such first before being seen as workers.
He said those workers may continue to work for the party even in difficult times.
He said the other category of workers principally work to please individuals but Mr. Asiedu Nketia advised that inasmuch as those workers remain loyal to incumbent executives, the latter must see them first and foremost as part of the party.
“If you look at them differently, you will know that there’s something in them that you can tap but if you look at them as loyal to a particular individual and because of that they must be sacked, then you stand the risk of breeding a set of workers at your party headquarters who’d want to be hedging when it comes to any election.”
