Ghana @50 Celebrations: Big Cultural Show in Winnipeg

As part of their on-going activities marking Ghana’s Golden Jubilee Celebrations, the “AGORO” Dancers from the Ghanaian Community in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada put up a spectacular Cultural Exposition on Saturday March 10, 2007. Nearly 300 people jam-packed the 250-seat capacity Forrest Nickerson Theater on the Pembina Highway in Winnipeg to enjoy one of the most spectacular displays of Ghana’s rich culture that I have witnessed around the Ghanaian communities in North America.

A group of young talented dancers and adults, attired in splendid cultural paraphernalia, did series of dances from various parts of Ghana. Perhaps the exposition that had the crowd cheering enthusiastically was a dramatization of a typical Ghanaian market scene dubbed the “Makola Dance”. It involved about sixteen youth (boys and girls) dancing with displays of various articles that can be found on the popular Makola Market in Ghana’s Capital City, Accra.

The Jubilee celebrations will climax with a Banquet Dinner on Saturday March 17 at the Fort Garry Hotel at 222 Broadway Avenue. The Key-Note Speaker will be Dr. Em?ke. J. Szathmáry, President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg.

Proceeds from the event will be contributed to the financing of the proposed Neurological Center at Korle Bu Hospital, Accra.
