Ghana@63: 81% of Ghanaians now have access to potable water – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says about 81 percent of Ghanaians presently have access to potable drinking water.

According to him, this is an improvement from a previous 19 percent of people who didn't have access to potable drinking water.

“19 percent of our people do not have access to potable water but 81 percent of people in Ghana presently have access to safe drinking water and we’re making progress. The supply of electricity has reached 85 percent of the country, we’re making progress,” he stated.

“We should be proud of the liberal democratic path we are threading and we must unite to make Ghana work. We could and should be able to bring out our people out poverty into prosperity faster but let us acknowledge that good things are happening in our country and we’re making process,” the President added.

Ghana today is celebrating a historic event, marking 63 years of self-rule by the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to have gained independence from colonial rule.

In attendance of the celebration would be Special Guest, Dr. Keith Rowley, the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, as well as his royal majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene.

The 42,000-capacity Baba Yara Sports Stadium was filled to capacity as Kumasi, Ghana’s oldest and second-largest city is hosting the event for the first time in the country’s history.

The anniversary is being commemorated under the theme, “Consolidating our Gains”.
