Ghana Airways Cut Salaries Of Workers

Sat, 2 Jun 2001 Source: Joy Online

Staff of the national carrier, Ghana Airways have had their salaries and allowances slashed by an average 35 per cent to save the financially distressed airline.

JOYFM investigations revealed that allowances of cabin crew and pilots have been reduced by 40 per cent and a 30 per cent cut in salaries effected across board.

The decision was reportedly taken by management to save the airline and staff their jobs. In spite of the cut in salaries and allowances, the financially distressed airline is still struggling to pay its staff.

April salaries were reportedly paid two weeks into the month of May. Ghana Airways is indebted to the tune of about one hundred and fifty million dollars and its creditors are refusing to transact business with the airline. Consequently, the airline is now compelled to pay for its expenditure including ground and handling charges in cash.
