Passengers stranded as Ghana Airways aircraft grounded for safety reasons

Accra July 28, GNA - A DC 10 aircraft of Ghana Airways has been grounded in the US by the Federal Aviation Administration following the failure of the airline to renew its aircraft operating licence. This leaves the airline with only one long haul aircraft, which now operates the European route and thus to grapple with the numerous passengers, who have already bought tickets to fly to the US.

On Tuesday night passengers on board Ghana Airways to the US were disappointed when after checking in they were informed that the aircraft to undertake that journey could not make it to Accra.

According to an official of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), the aircraft could be described as technically unfit to fly, since before a licence is renewed all the necessary checks must be carried out to ensure that the aircraft was airworthy.

The Official said the US Government had served notice of its intention to conduct a comprehensive safety audit of the GCAA oversight responsibility.

The GCAA has agreed in principle to submit to the audit and has already initiated preliminary discussions on it.
