The Ghana Armed Forces on Friday denied a BBC Focus on Africa news bulletin that a Ghanaian soldier was killed when RUF rebels attacked an ECOMOG position on Peppel Island in Sierra Leone on November 29 and December one.

A statement in Accra said on the night of Tuesday, November 29 and early hours of Wednesday, December one, some rebels attacked a Ghanaian position of Peppel Island. It said the attack was professionally repulsed by the Ghanaians and at the end of the exchange, Lance Corporal John Mensah was slightly wounded in the thigh and is responding to treatment at the Ghana Battalion Medical Post in Sierra Leone.

It assured all Ghanaians that the situation is under control and that all the troops in Sierra Leone are doing well with high morale. British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Focus on Africa news bulletin at 1705 hours and 0530 hours on November 30 and December one, reported that a Ghanaian soldier was killed during the attack. Some local FM stations have also carried the same BBC news bulletin.
