Ghana Bar Association warns public against unwarranted attacks on members

The leadership of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) is unhappy about attacks and threats on their members for defending persons without access to speedy and effective justice especially members of vulnerable groups, accused persons who are unable to have their voices heard.

“Having received complaints from some lawyers about threats to their lives for defending accused persons, let me take this opportunity to reiterate that our democracy is premised on the Law of Rules”.President of the Ashanti Regional GBA , Francis Koffie Esq, revealed at the celebration of the 36th Martyrs Day Memorial Service held in Kumasi for the three murdered High Court judges; Justice Fred Opoku Sarkodie, Justice Cecilia Koranteng Addow and Justice Kwadwo Agyei Agyapong.

“Lawyers are critical in the effort to have these rules respected, defended and applied in the practical endeavor of administering justice”, the Regional GBA President pointed out

According to the Francis Koffie Esq, the three murdered judges discharged their duties without any fear or favor but we killed by their assailants due to certain misconceptions by a section of Ghanaians at the time who accused them of being corrupt in dispensing justices without any evidential prove.

“We must condemn in no uncertain terms persons whether under the cloak of youth groups, vigilantes, security officers, police or military who threaten to or take the law into their own hands and attack other citizens or persons no matter the cause”, Francis Koffie Esq stressed at the event attended by MyNewsGh.com reporters.

The astute legal practitioner also pointed out that Rule of Law in Ghana cannot be sustained in when citizens take the law into their own hands and in particular administer “mob justice ” which is not in accordance with laid down in the highest form of injustice.
