Accra, Feb 26, GNA- Ghana and Brazil have acknowledged the need to intensify their co-operation at the multilateral level within the framework of the United Nations (U.N.).
They have also agreed that Brazil, as a current member of the UN Security Council would champion the cause of the Third World during its tenure.
These agreements were reached when a three member Brazilian Delegation, led by Ambassador Pedro Motta Pinto Da Choelho, paid a five-day working visit to the country, during which they were granted audience by Minister of Foreign Affairs.
A press release in Accra said the visit was in pursuant of the decision of the Governments of Ghana and Brazil to review all aspects of their bilateral relations, as well as co-operation in the area of multilateral diplomacy, in order to strengthen further relations.
During the visit, the delegation also held bilateral talks with the Directorate of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, during which both countries emphasized the determination of their Governments to reinforce their political, economic, technical and cultural co-operation.
In this context, the two sides assessed the extent of implementing the Ghana-Brazil Joint Commission for Co-operation Agreement concluded as far back as 1988, and agreed on the need for its immediate review and reactivation for the mutual benefit of the two countries. It was accordingly decided that the next session of the Joint Commission should be held in Brasilia in May 2004.
The release said the Brazilian delegation registered its appreciation for Ghana's leadership role in the West Africa region and commended her highly for spearheading effort to restore peace in the region. Ambassador da Coelho and his team also interacted with the Brazilian Tabon Community in James Town Accra.
The delegation had since Friday February 20 2004, left for Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
