The National Identification Authority (NIA) has clarified that the validity of the Ghana Card remains 10 years, dismissing reports suggesting otherwise.
In a statement signed by its Head of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah E. Darlas, the Authority reaffirmed that the card is valid for a decade from the date of issuance, after which holders are required by law to renew.
According to the NIA, recent comments made by its Executive Secretary, Wisdom Kwaku Deku, were taken out of context.
The Authority explained that it had not announced any immediate policy changes but had only hinted that future reviews might consider shorter update intervals to keep up with rapid technological advancements.
“The current ten-year renewal period remains unchanged,” the statement emphasised.
It noted that both the physical durability of the card and the natural changes in cardholders’ personal features over time justify the ten-year cycle.
The Authority urged Ghanaians to disregard misinformation circulating on the matter and assured the public of its continued commitment to providing a secure, reliable, and future-proof national identity system.
