.... Admit Heroin Smuggling
Two men have pleaded guilty in United States Federal District Court to conspiracy to smuggle heroin from Ghana into the United States.
One of the men, Attah Evan Kwasi, was a large-scale trafficker who was extradited from Ghana last year, said Michael J. Garcia, the United States attorney in Manhattan.
Mr. Garcia said the other man, Newman Ayiwah, was the New York City distributor and was arrested in the Bronx last year on charges of possessing more than a pound of heroin.
Mr. Garcia said the conspiracy involved couriers who swallowed pellets containing heroin in Ghana and traveled to the United States on commercial airliners. Each man faces a possible sentence of 10 years to life in prison, prosecutors said.
