Ghana Health Service to sanction student nurses

Bolgatanga, July 22, GNA - The Upper East Regional Director of Ghana Health Service, Dr. John Koku Awoonor-Williams, has said it was against the rules of Service for student nurses to get pregnant while in training or during their orientation.

He told the GNA in an interview that the practice was unacceptable and appropriate sanctions would be applied to such students.

Dr Awoonor-Williams said student nurses who got pregnant during training did not acquire the requisite skill to enable them to practice as professionals.

He said the professional training of the nurse would be incomplete without the one year mandatory orientation.

Dr Awoonor-Williams said there had been requests for the release of nurses on orientation to the Greater Accra, Ashanti and the Brong-Ahafo regions and any nurse who would contravene the orientation policy shall have his or her name deleted from the payroll as having vacated post and not certified for appointment by the service.

Dr Awoonor-Williams appealed to sponsoring agencies to stop sneaking students out of the orientation period and allow them to go through the training.
