The first temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in West Africa is completed... and will open for public tours today.
The temple is being built on the main avenue that runs through the center of town. It is surrounded by the Accra Christiansborg Stake Center, West Africa Administration Building, and an ancillary housing building. The completed project is beautifully perched upon a gently rising hill in the center of the city.
The Accra temple was built entirely by Africans, with materials native to the continent.
The temple facade is Namibian granite.
Moldings are of native makore wood.
Handcrafted furniture and special art-glass windows also reflect an African influence.
Pulic tours will end on December 20th.
The dedication of the new temple will be on Sunday, January 11, 2004.
He was conducted round by the Africa West Area President of the Church, Mr. Sheldon Chald.
