Ghana Maritime Authority donates to Bongo Schools

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) in collaboration with indegenes of Bongo Anafobiisi have donated 200 dual desks to the Primary and two Junior High Schools (JHSs) in the community in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region.

Some broke down furniture was also repaired to help increase the number of desks for pupils of the beneficiary schools as part of efforts to improve on teaching and learning in the area.

Hitherto to the intervention by the GMA as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), pupils of the beneficiary schools laid on the bare floor during instructional hours which caught the attention of well-meaning citizens from the community who launched a campaign to raise funds to fix the problem.

This idea was therefore birthed by then Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority, Mr. Kwame Owusu who approved that 30 thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢30,000) be given to support the course which come to the realization at the weekend.

Also, past students of the basic school, members of the community and some staff of the Ghana Maritime Authority individually contributed various sums to ensure the donation materialized.

Naba Anyanebah Akolgo Saabo II, Chief of the area, expressed his profound gratitude to the Board, Management and staff of the Ghana Maritime Authority saying ‘’I wish to express my in-depth gratitude to the Board, Management and Staff of Ghana Maritime Authority for their invaluable contribution towards this project. A special thanks also goes to the former Director-General of Ghana Maritime Authority, Mr. Kwame Owusu who took keen interest in this project.’’

‘’I wish to make a passionate appeal to the District Chief Executive and the Ghana Education Service Directorate that the schools need urgent expansion of infrastructure such as new classroom blocks and ICT Centers as technology now drives the world globally. Even though we are doing our bit to help ourselves, I expect government through the District Assembly to support us meet some critical needs’’ the Chief added.

The group was led by Hon. Simon Alandge (former MP for Bongo) Dr Joseph Atiah Akama (head of cardiology at Korle Bu teaching Hospital) COP Maxwell Atingane (Ghana Police Service) Mr. Paul Agilbire Apalangya (Ghana Manganese company, Takwa) Lawyer Anthony Mba Ndor (Ghana Maritime Authority) , Dr. Vitus Apalangya (Lecturer, University of Ghana) Mr. Asuguna Justice (Land Commission, Central Region) and Mrs Abota Agnes (Nurse ,Ghana Health Service, Accra).

Another person who contributed to the donation was madam Georgina Ayenu who is based in the United States of America, but does not hail from the community.
