The Ghana Nurses Association of Virginia celebrated their one year anniversary on Saturday November 21 with a host of activities. Under the leadership of Dr. Daniel Ampomah (PHD) and Frederick Yeboah (RN) the Association has established a strong presence within the African Community over the past one year.
The Associations currently with a membership of about 64 includes not only registered Nurses (RN) but also Licensed Professional Nurses (LPN), Certified Nursing Assistances (CNA) and Nursing Students currently in School. Within the past one year members of the Association have embarked on Health outreach programs educating the community in Churches about High Blood pressure, Cholesterol, Diabetes and Various ailments of major concern that impact the African Community in Virginia. The Ghana Nurses Association of Virginia got birthed and outdoored on November 15th 2008. The one year anniversary had 100 nurses participating in the event. It was indeed a dream come true to see professionals with the same goal collaborating and networking as never before. The celebration drew nurses from all walks of life under one umbrella sharing this special day with colleagues and enjoying keynote addresses from various speakers including Dr. Constance Gewa (PHD) MPH , Assistant Professor, College of Health and Human Services , GMU , Fairfax, Virginia, Jean Moore (PHD) RN , Associate Professor , School of Nursing , George Mason University , in Virginia and Mrs. Martha Pobee-Head of Mission of the Ghana Embassy in Washington DC who was the Special Guest of Honor. One of the long term goals of the association is the establishment of the Ghana Nurses Association of the Greater Washington DC Metropolitan area. This will include Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. In an interview with Daniel Ampomah (PHD) who is the President of the Association he said “ I dreamed that one day Ghanaian nurses living in Virginia would come together, break bread, share ideas, help each other grow in the noble profession of nursing, and above all lend a hand to our communities. Also the enthusiasm with which my fellow nurses have embraced this idea of GHANAVA is refreshing to the soul. What we need now is unity of purpose and the determination to carry on.”
The Association is using this medium to call on all Ghanaians in the Noble profession of Nursing to join hands in the effort to achieve long and sustainable network of Nurses across the United States .
