It was the chance that was never taken. Asante Kotoko missed out on a perfect opportunity to take over the first position in week eight of the Ghana Premier League on Sunday.

Tied on points with Aduana Stars at the top ahead of the weekend's round of games, all the Porcupine Warriors needed was to avoid defeat in Accra, following Aduana's surprise loss on Saturday.

The Kumasi-based outfit were, however, stung by Vincent Atinga's 73rd minute penalty in a 1-0 reversal to Hearts of Oak in the Super Clash at the Accra Sports Stadium. The result sees the Phobians claim a home victory over the Fabulous Boys for the first time since 2009, moving up to 6th on the table.

Due to a better goal record, Aduana still sit top, despite Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Ebusua Dwarfs. Nicholas Gyan and Osman Mohammed were on target for the Crabs, while Tanko Mohammed got the away side's consolation.

Third-placed Bechem United, three points below the top two, also spurned an opportunity to catch up by a 2-1 loss to Bolga All Stars at the Utrecht Academy Park in Tamale. Eric Owusu's strike was not enough as Hafiz Wontah Konkoni and Maxwell Frimpong secured three points for the newly-promoted, who sit bottom of the table.

Wa All Stars occupy the fourth position, following a scoreless draw with Liberty Professionals.

At the Nduom Stadium, new boys Elmina Sharks, now fifth on the standings, handed 2014-15 champions Ashanti Gold a 1-0 defeat, courtesy of Tetteh Nortey's strike.

Wafa are back to winning ways after a 2-0 triumph over Berekum Chelsea in Sogakope. The Academy Boys sit eighth on the table, one place above the Blues.

Struggling Great Olympics once again failed to hold on to a lead as their chase for a first season win on the pitch continues. Douglas Opoku's opener was cancelled out by Bismarck Oppong as the 'Dade' Boys played out a 1-1 away draw with Medeama.

In the last game of matchday eight, Inter Allies and Tema Youthwill lock horns at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra on Monday.
