Ghana Police Service honours retirees

Accra, Feb. 12, GNA - The Ghana Police Service on Saturday honoured 30 retired officers for their invaluable contribution towards the service.

They were given plaques, electric gas cookers and tabletop refrigerators.

Those awarded included Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Justice Kwabena Asante former Divisional Commander, Agona Swedru, ACP George Oppong Asante, former Regional Commander Northern Region, ACP Agnes Sika Nartey, former Tema Municipal Commander, among others. Nana Owusu Nsiah, Inspector General of Police (IGP), speaking at a luncheon organized for the retirees said, he instituted the award to ensure that officers were honoured for their strenuous effort towards the sustainability of the service.

He noted that police duty was stressful and that it took only men and women who are committed to discharge it. Nana Nsiah said the service would continue to tap the rich experiences of the retirees to boost the already existing ones. The IGP said the retired officers would be of enormous help to the police, particularly in sniffing for information on criminal activities in the community.

"As you join the public they will easily give you tip off that the service will need to enhance its work." The Sierra Leonean Assistant Inspector General of Police In-charge of Professional Standards, Mrs Kadi Fakondo, who attended the ceremony was impressed at the gesture and said she would ensure that it was replicated in their service.

She commended the Ghanaian police for the tireless manner they had work in maintaining law and order in the country. Mrs Fakondo said without the presence of the police, lawlessness and anarchy would have its full grip on society. She called on the public to be cooperative and assist the police in the discharge of their duties to ensure that lives and property were adequately protected.
