The Ghana Police Service apart from other logistical constraints in the performance of their constitutionally mandated daily duties, can boost of just 6000 AK47’s for the entire Police Service, Mr. Adam Bonaa Security Analyst and CEO of Security Warehouse Limited said this in an interview with TV3.
According to him,the state that the police in cases of confrontations with criminals would perceptibly lose their grip on them because they are inadequately equipped.
This fact has been made evident in past criminal cases and the recent Kwabenya police station attack where one police officer was shot dead by unknown armed gang who broke jail to free seven suspects in police custody.
"No one knows who the attackers are and how they were able to execute such a barbaric act without any hitches" he quizzed.
The bigger question is “if the police cannot protect themselves, how can they protect the citizens of the country”he said.
The security Analyst speaking on the Kwabenya case noted that there would be the need to have had surveillance systems in place to know how the police station was invaded and to aid the investigations.
Let’s ask ourselves, “How an entire nation can be under the protection of just 6,000 AK-47 riffles”.
ACP David Senanu Eklu the Director General of Police Public Affairs Directorate speaking on the Kwabenya case, stated that all police stations in the country have standard security measures but also admitted that those measures needed to be reviewed and strengthened.
