The Human Resource Department of the Ghana Post Company Ltd is to train a total of 240 of its staff on the use of the computer this year. The exercise is to enable the company respond appropriately and competently to the demands of the fast changing age of technology.
Last year, the company trained 75 members of staff on the computer software application. The Managing Director, Mr. Isaac Adu Boahene, disclosed this at the company's annual Performance Review Conference at Elmina.
The two-day review meeting held under the theme: "Applying Technology in postal delivery to improve quality service" was attended by Board members, management, heads of department, Regional and unit heads and representatives of the Communication Workers Union.
Adu Boahene said in order to keep abreast with the incredible technological advances and developments, the company had improved upon the track and trace system to the International Postal System 96 (IPS 96) which is internet based and faster and more flexible. According to him, Ghana Post has expanded and improved its revenue earning activities and diversified into non traditional revenue earning activities to boost revenue in the area of agency and financial services.
The MD, however, cautioned employees to step up customer service because "it is the deciding factor in the success of any business." He reminded them to respond promptly to customer complaints and ensure quality control through prompt delivery of mail, safety and security of mail.
The Minister of Communication, Mr. F. K. Owusu Adjapong, who was represented at the conference, commended the company for the re-introduction of the Post Office Savings Bank and the diversification of its revenue generation base in agency services, renewal of driving licence, money transfers, payment of electricity bills and the sale of passport forms and phone cards.
Owusu-Adjapong described these steps as "strategy for growth" and hoped Ghanaians would now see Ghana Post as a strong, virile and transformed company purged of the negative reputation associated with the former corporation and enhance profitability. Mrs. Peace Ayisi-Octchere, acting chairperson of the company's Board of Directors, presided over the two-day conference attended by 75 participants.
