Ghana Praises Tie With Nigeria

The Ghananian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mrs. Nana Bema-Kumi , has expressed satisfaction over the level of progress recorded in Ghana-Nigeria bilateral relationship in the past one year.

Speaking at a cocktail held to mark Ghana's Independence Anniversary in Abuja yesterday, Bema-Kumi noted that the bilateral relations between the two nations has not only grown stronger but that the scope has also widened.

She observed that the last year has witnessed a flurry of diplomatic activities, adding that no single week passed without high-ranking officials from the two countries meeting in Abuja or Accra to discuss social and economic matters with a view to striking a common ground in their development efforts.

According to the High Commissioner, a number of Ghananian professional bodies including those of chartered accountants, lawyers, engineers and medical doctors as well as other government agencies have held bilateral meetings with their Nigerian counterparts to harmonize their policies to better serve the interests of the people of the two countries.

Mrs. Bema-Kumi also listed other areas of cooperation to include discussions on trade liberalization, Customs Service, Trade Union issues and Sports development.

On the Sub-regional , Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS), the diplomat said that Ghana's interest and active participation in the affairs of the sub-regional body has culminated in the election of the President of Ghana, Mr. John Kufuor as the Chairman of ECOWAS.

Bema-kumi who is also the Acting Ghana permanent representative to ECOWAS pledged that Ghana would strive hard to foster good relations with all her neighbours.
