Ghana Railway boosts passenger service in Accra

Accra July 24, GNA - The Ghana Railway Company on Thursday increased passenger service on the Accra-Nsawam urban shuttle with the acquisition of an additional coach.

The coach has increased the seating capacity by 10 per cent making it possible to transport 5,248 passengers up from 4,672 daily on the busy Accra-Nsawam route.

This was contained in a release signed by Mr Ahmed Ayuba, Special Assistant to the Minister of Ports, Harbours and Railways.

It said the shuttle service transports passengers and plies the increasingly patronized Accra-Nsawam route four times daily and stops at places such as Dome, Amasaman, Kotoku and Achimota.

The Minister of Ports, Harbours and Railways, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi recently decried the congestion on the shuttle saying this posed a danger to the lives of passengers.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi asked the Management of the Ghana Railway Company to increase the number of coaches on the Accra-Nsawam shuttle in order to improve passenger service and reduce the risk of some passengers hanging on moving trains.

One passenger died on July 17 when he attempted to alight from a moving train.
