The Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), in collaboration with the Ghana Reads Initiative and Adwinsa Publications, celebrated this year's World Water Day on Wednesday, March 22, 2024, with the students of Dodowa Presby 'B' Basic School in the Shai Osudoku District.

The theme for the 2024 World Water Day was "Water for Peace."

Harriet Lomotey, the Shai Osudoku District Director for Education, speaking at the event, announced an essay competition for students within the district, emphasizing the importance of inculcating water conservation and peace promotion.

"In Shai Osudoku, we are introducing a competition where the children are to write an essay on the theme 'Water for Peace,' in no less than 300 words and no more than 400 words. The essay competition will be sponsored by the directorate, and the winning school or students will be appropriately rewarded," she informed the media.

Godwin Kotoku, the Acting Regional Director for the Community Water and Sanitation Agency in the Greater Accra Region, noted that every individual in society has a responsibility to protect water bodies.

Addressing human activities that threaten our water bodies, Mr. Kotoku emphasized the need for children, who are the future leaders, to be informed and educated about protecting water bodies.

"God gave us water, but we also have a responsibility to protect our water bodies. We are all aware of the effects of climate change, which is affecting the availability of water. We are also aware of some happenings in Ghana, including unregulated illegal mining activities, which are polluting our water bodies. Now, the Ghana Water Company and we at CWSA have to spend more money to treat the water we supply to the public," he said.

"If we do not take proactive measures now, the prediction that we may have to import water in the future may come to pass. For that reason, it is commendable that the Ghana Reads Initiative has taken it upon themselves to ensure that the children read and learn about these important issues," he added.

Albert Koomson, the National Director of the Ghana Reads Initiative, also underscored the need to adequately prepare the younger generation for a future where they will be committed to peace and water conservation.
