Ghana Red Cross reviews activities

Aburi (E/R) Nov. 28 GNA - The Secretary-General of the Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS), Mr Andrews Frimpong on Tuesday urged partners and stakeholders to assist the movement to help to save lives and provide relief to the vulnerable in the society.

"The society is poised to assist the public by providing humanitarian services to the less privileged in the various communities", he said. Mr Frimpong said vulnerability was sometimes created from natural disasters, unplanned communities, poor infrastructure, education and health problems.

He was speaking at a two-day strategic planning workshop, attended by 40 participants drawn from various branches of the Society and various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) whose functions are linked to GRCS.

He said the workshop would revive the strategic programme of the GRCS and sensitise benefactors and also to solicit assistance to execute its mandate.

He said: "The society has a mandate to provide, promote health and relieve pain and suffering while giving support and aid to disaster and war victims".

Mr Frimpong said it would, therefore, develop new programmes and activities to fit into the global activities of the Red Cross movement. He stated that, the Red Cross was gearing itself by building the capacity for the Ghana at Fifty celebrations and the CAN 2008. Mrs Theresa Nobiya, Health Co-ordinator of GRCS, said the Movement covered 50 per cent of the country with 56,000 volunteers, 60 per cent of which covered the youth and 40 per cent adults including mothers clubs.

She said the GCRS relied on the generosity of the people and called on philanthropists to help to motivate the members.
