The Ministry of Finance has ordered investigations into allegations that Ghana Telecom took delivery of about 50 cross-country vehicles, some of which were given to the former ruling NDC party for use as sponsorship during the party's congress at Ho last April.
The allegations also added that 200 fully connected mobile phones costing a total of 380 million cedis were given out to some members of the party free of charge.
According to the Evening News, the main reason why the company is being investigated is that the vehicles were brought into the country without the payment of necessary customs duties leading to a loss of revenue to the state.
The report added that another angle that the investigations will take would be to determine whether the cars were returned after the congress.
However according to the Communications Manager of Ghana Telecom, the phones were given out to NDC party functionaries, but solely on trial basis since they had just started their mobile phone service. He however denied that the vehicles were given out to the NDC and added that all the fifty vehicles are currently in the service of the company.
