The Ghana/Togo Diaspora has donated relief items to Togolese asylum seekers in Chereponi in the Northern Region.

The refugees numbering 502, majority being males as well as about 47 children, fled their Mango Province following political unrest in Togo after opposition protestors began mounting pressure on President Gnassingbe and the Gnassingbe family to end the over their fifty years political rule.

The items including bags of rice, sugar, gari, beans, mats, buckets, plates, detergents, cooking oil, mosquito coils, clothes and kettles among others were presented to them.

The donation was made possible through the instrumentality of Patron of the Diaspora Ghana, Madam Foussena Dagba with support from members of the Ghana Diaspora.

The Presiding Member of the Chereponi District, Ben Ngisah Kofi urged the asylum seekers to respect the laws of the country.

“I urge you all to remain disciplined and abide by the laws of this country so as not to abuse the hospitality shown you by Ghanaians especially the people of Chereponi who have accommodated some of you in their homes”.

Meanwhile, about 240 Togolese asylum seekers are still struggling with accommodation. The refugees, currently are living on the benevolence of some local people who have offered their homes to them. Madam Foussena Dagba called for support in the area of accommodation for the asylum seekers.

“I will use this opportunity to appeal to Ghana government, non-governmental organizations, and benevolent societies to assist in providing decent accommodation for our people”.

The Chereponi District Assembly assured Madam Dagba and her team members that the items would judiciously be used to improve the living standards of the asylum seekers.
