A Togolese ministerial delegation is in the Volta region to join a Ghana ministerial team to undertake a two-day tour of some communities along the Ghana-Togo border.
The Togolese team is led by General Sizing Walla, Togolese Minister of the Interior and Security and includes the Togolese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr David Ashiogbor Folivi. The Ghanaian delegation is led by Nii Okaija Adamafio, Minister of the Interior and includes Mr David Anaglate, Ghana's Ambassador to Togo and Alhaji Seidu Iddi, Volta Regional Minister.
The ministerial team will address the communities along the frontier and verify alleged removal of some boundary pillars by some communities on the Togo side of the border. The communities to be visited are Akyem Kpoeta, Hanyigba Todzi, Kame Tornu Wli Agorviefe and Kute. Others are Ampayeo, Stephanokope and Fotoyeye.
At a briefing at Ho before the departure of the Lome, General Walla expressed his government's satisfaction at the resumption of talks between the two countries over the border issue.
General Sizing Walla called for the maintenance of peace and openness to promote brotherliness and co-habitation among the peoples of the communities living along their common borders. He noted that the Togolese government does not support the events of the recent past involving the destruction of boundary pillars and airspace by some Togolese, adding, "This is the justification for a resumption of talks to find a lasting solution to the problem?.
Nii Okaija said the two countries have cultural, historical and social ties, which make it imperative for their countries to live in mutual respect towards the uplifting of the well-being of their people. He expressed the commitment of the two governments to find a lasting solution to the problem, which has the potential of generating into a conflict. He said they would therefore endeavor to conduct their discussions with mutual respect, openness and transparency for the common good of their peoples.
Lt Col John Fokuo, Commanding Officer of the Medium Mortar Regiment, said the international boundary pillars 1 - 148 between Togo and Ghana were jointly installed in 1974. He alleged that the Togolese destroyed most of the pillars and even mounted their flags in some communities where commercial transaction was in the CFA
