Togo’s national team is quietly building a squad full of Ghana-born talent, raising eyebrows across West Africa.

Over the past few years, several players born or developed in Ghana have opted to represent the Sparrow Hawks, giving coach Patrice Neveu a growing pool of talent to call upon for upcoming matches.

The trend started with defenders like Kennedy Boateng, who left Ghanaian football behind to become a Togo international, and Emmanuel Hackman, eligible through his Togolese mother.

Midfielder Samuel Asamoah, born in Accra to a Ghanaian father and Togolese mother, also made the switch, as did prolific striker Yaw Annor, a former Ghana Premier League top scorer.

Recently, defender Wilson Akakpo, another Ghana-born player, joined their ranks, further strengthening Togo’s options at the back.

The latest addition to this growing list is Sharani Zuberu, the 26-year-old left-back currently playing for Slovan Bratislava in Slovakia. Zuberu, who spent part of his youth at Dreams FC in Ghana, adds both experience and versatility to Togo’s squad.

Meanwhile, French-born Auxerre defender Marvin Senaya, eligible for France, Ghana, and Togo, has also been included in Togo’s preliminary squad ahead of friendlies later in March 2026.

The final list is expected to be confirmed by Neveu in the coming days.

For Togo, the integration of Ghana-born players does not only boost squad depth but also brings in individuals who have been trained in some of West Africa’s most competitive systems.

With a blend of homegrown talent and naturalised players, Togo hopes to build a squad capable of competing in upcoming qualifiers and friendlies.

For the Ghana-born players, it represents an opportunity to shine on the international stage, even if it means leaving their country of birth behind.
