Young Ghanaian poet, and graduate from the University for Development Studies, Ibrahim Muhammad Saani says Ghana can achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the use of poetry.
According to him, poetry is a powerful art that changes the mindset and attitudes of people and prepares them well for action.
"Poetry is a powerful art if given maximum attention will make a great impact on society and the globe as a whole" The Ehalakasa 2017 champion indicates.
Mr. Saani, whose stage is IM Saani, states that poetry should be considered in addition to other efforts being made to achieve SDGs in the country.
He adds, "a poet who performs on say [SDG four], quality education, will buttress amazing ways to act, in order to achieve such goals"
IM Saani was speaking ahead of the Inspirational poetry show set to be held later today, Saturday October 13, 2018 at the UDS-TLC New Auditorium.
The Inspirational poetry show is a spectacular show to inspire, educate, entertain and combat injustice using the art of spoken word poetry, comedy, and stage play.
This year, the poets are set to whet the appetite of the patrons as their performances will be on some of the sustainable development goals.
According to Mr. Saani, the rationale is to use their creativity to contribute to the universal call to achieve the goals.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Global Goals for Sustainable Development are a collection of 17 global goals set by the United Nations General Assembly.
The SDGs are part of Resolution 70/1 of the United Nations General Assembly: "Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development." That has been shortened to "2030 Agenda."
The goals are broad and interdependent, yet each has a separate list of targets to achieve.
Achieving all 169 targets would be a signal to accomplish all 17 goals. The SDGs cover social and economic development issues including poverty, hunger, health, education, global warming, gender equality, water, sanitation, energy, urbanization, environment, and social justice.
