Ghana has been elected to serve on the Governing Council of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) at its session in November 2002 in London.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Imformation and Presidential Affairs said Cabinet, in November 2001, gave the Ministry of Roads and Transport the approval to seek, on behalf of the government, Ghana’s election to the council.

It said as a result of this, the Minister of Roads and Transport, Dr. Richard Anane, who represents Ghana on the council, with the collaboration of Ghana’s Commissioner to the United Kingdom, presented Ghana’s candidature for election.

It said Ghana was consequently elected to Category “C” means “states which have special interest in maritime transport and whose election to the council will ensure the representation of all major geographic areas of the world” .

It said Category “A” and “B” are the states which provide the largest shipping services and international seaborne trade respectively.

The statement said despite the categorisation, all members have equal votes and recognition.
