The Minister for Roads and Highways has revealed that Ghana has about seventy-four thousand kilometres of roads to be constructed to meet the demands of the citizenry.

He said, these are a total of roads including highways and urban roads in the country waiting to be constructed.

According to him, all the needed assessments have been done and construction will commence soon as the president has given his preparedness for the construction of roads in the country.

Kwasi Amoako-Atta said the country needs this level of roads to be constructed before being described as a country with good roads in the sub-region.

He said many Ghanaians are yearning for good roods but it is not an easy task for the country to achieve this task.

He claimed that good roads may sound good but good roads can deadly if people are not well educated on how to use it.

‘’When the roads are good people turn to over speed on them thereby creating additional problems for the country but when the roads are bad they turn to be a little cautious when driving on it,’’ he said.

The Minister made these comments when he joined the Minister of Inner City and Zongo Development and Member of Parliament for Madina; Alhaji Abubakar Saddique Boniface to assess some bad roads for construction in the La-Nkwantang Municipal Assembly of the Greater Accra Region.

He gave the assurance that the president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has given a strong indication to have all these seventy-four thousand kilometres of the country’s roads fixed.

And very soon Ghanaians will see the roads being constructed going into the next tenure of the president before the Vice president Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia takes over from him (the president) he teases.

He said construction of roads will this year begin in all the zongo areas across the country and Madina is launch pad for the construction of roads in the country.

The Roads Minister moved his team of directors led by Dr. Abass Awal, the Director of Urban Roads to tour the area to assess the levels of bad roads in the area.

The tour took the two ministers to UN area, Washington-SDA roads, Odo Grace Area, Victory Academy road as well as the road in front of the New Patriotic Party’s Member of Parliament for Suhum in the Eastern Region residence in Accra, Redco flats, Madina Zongo among others.

He told the gathering at a durbar after the tour that the Ministry has taken a Memo to Cabinet to have the road problems solved as the president indicated in his State of Nation Address (SoNA) before Parliament.

He observed that the challenges on roads have become a worry to the president as many drivers are not killing their speed and research has shown that 91 percent accidents recorded on our roads are man-made that can be avoided if drivers exercise caution on the road.

Alhaji Abubakar Saddique Bomiface on his part said the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will transform the zongos communities to be places of hope and prosperity.

According to him; to accomplish this, the president created the Ministry of Inner City and Zongo Development and established the Zongo Development Fund (ZoDF) to help transform the inner-city and zongo communities.

He said the vision of the Ministry is to have a prosperous, inclusive and sustainably developed inner City and zongo communities in the country.

“The ministry has prepared a plan based on four thematic areas to deliver on its mandate namely: infrastructure and sanitation enhancement, social and economic development, crime and security control, heritage and cultural promotion,” he stressed.
