The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Asaadu Waste Management Company, Dr. Edward Asaadu has underscored the need for Ghana to stop importing other countries waste into the country. Speaking to Kwame Tutu on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he said the fertilizers we have been importing from other countries are produced from waste which is we equally equally generate in Ghana.
‘’Government should stop importing fertilizer into the country because we have the waste that can help us generate the fertilizer. Our waste is 50 percent organic and the amount we invest in importing fertilizer into Ghana, will help us reduce waste generated in the country drastically,’’ he said.
Ghana he lamented has not outlined measures to benefit from the waste we generate but in other countries, waste management is cherished as money making machine. ‘Waste in Germany is a raw material and gold for them.
But in Ghana, we see it as nothing. If we are able to recycle waste properly, it will inure to our benefit. However, if we do not manage them properly, it will cause more harm than good, he added.
He also bemoaned the lack of landfill site in the country. Aside that, the exorbitant charges on the importation on waste management equipment, is collapsing businesses in the country.
He wondered why we continue to import anti-malaria drugs when we can use the same resources to manage our waste which in turn, minimize the increasing rate of communicable diseases.
