Former President John Rawlings recently courted controversy when he accused former President Agyekum Kufuor of monopolizing corruption during his term in office.

Former President Rawlings when he signed a book of condolence in honour of late South African President, Nelson Mandela, at the South African High Commission in Accra also stated that “by the time John the fourth (referring to President John Dramani Mahama) also got on board and with his nature, he’s not autocratic, he’s an easy going person, I’m not saying it is healthy, being so easy going, everybody was just taking advantage and everybody is doing whatever they want wherever”.

Speaking to the issue on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo, aspiring National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Awuku said if truly President Mahama allows his appointees to do what they want, then the country is ‘in serious trouble’.

According to him, “I am surprised that President Rawlings thinks corruption in this administration is because President Mahama is easy-going. He has indicted President Mahama more; he (Mr Rawlings) has put him (President Mahama) in a deep fix”

Awuku emphasised that “if that is the case (Mahama is easygoing), then we are in serious trouble…because according to Rawlings, the leader we have now is not firm and strong to fight corruption.

Meanwhile, Awuku has disagreed with the former President's assertion that former President Kufuor monopolized corruption in his administration. According to him, former President Kufuor did all he could to fight corruption.

“…nonetheless, the most important thing should be how to fight corruption and not making such comments. We shouldn’t be preaching this kind of things” he asserted.
