Ghana must improve its educational system to bring hope to youth – Professor Assié-Lumumba

Prof N’Dri Thérèse Assié-Lumumba, a Professor of African, Diaspora and Comparative/International Education at Cornell University, US in the African Studies and Research Center has urged the government of Ghana led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo to re-think the educational system of the country to help bring hope to the youth.

Prof Assié-Lumumba, who is also the immediate Past-President of Comparative and International Education Society (CIES), said this in an exclusive interview with mynewsgh.com on the issue of Ghana’s high level unemployment.

She explained that government of Ghana must invest in the youth, the future of the country.

“We let down our youth, they are the future of this country, and we need to prepare them. That is why it is important to re-think our educational system so that the young populace can be assured of better place to study and be guaranteed that they would have some good qualification”. She said.

The educationist also advocated that, all stakeholders must come together to help prepare the youth not only to have certificates, but also develop them to be capable of using their imagination to create and bring new inventions to benefit the world.

“The quality of education has declined a lot. Therefore, the country needs to make additional effort in order to increase enrollment and maintain the quality of education”. She stressed.

When being quizzed whether Ghana’s educational quality could be as a result of corruption, Prof Lumumba explained that, the issue is not just corruption but sometimes the country experiences this because of lack of proper management.

For that reason, she suggested that, leaders must properly oversee policies as well as allocating a larger part of the national budget to invest in education.
