Parliament's majority leader, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, has opposed the call by some individuals that President Nana Akufo-Addo should enforce total lockdown in a quest to prevent the widespread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country.

According to him, Ghana does not have the financial capacity to lock down the country as the government will find it difficult to pay salaries of public workers as well as support the private sector to pay its workers.

“Total lockdown is not needed at this stage, Ghana does not have the financial capacity to bear the cost of a total lockdown,” Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu exclusively told Kwame Tutu on Anopa Nkomo on Accra-based Kingdom FM 107.7

” Total lockdown will affect many people in the country so I don’t support the call for total lockdown now, let’s adhere to the preventive measures by the Ghana Health Service to control the widespread of the COVID-19 disease.”

An effective lockdown, according to him, requires an extremely wide range of measures to support people.

Ghana’s COVID-19 case count now stands at 636, up by some 70 more cases.
