Accra, June 22, GNA - Ghana on Wednesday pledged her support to the United Nations (UN) and the International Community in their effort to engender peace in the Middle East. President John Agyekum Kufuor, who made the pledge, said normalcy in the Middle East would not only ensure peace in the area but the entire world. He made the pledge when Mr Noam Katz, Israeli Ambassador in Ghana based in Abuja, Nigeria, presented his Letters of Credence at the Castle, Osu.

President Kufuor called on Israel to endeavour to maintain normalcy with her neighbours for peace to spread to other areas in the world including Africa. He said Israel had long standing relations with Ghana and was among the first countries to establish diplomatic relations after independence in 1957 and assisted Ghana to set up the Black Star Line.

However, President Kufuor said since then the relationship had been quiet and not too eventful because of the changing scenes in the Middle East. He appealed to the Israeli Government to ensure the safety of Ghanaians living in Israel and pledged the Government's commitment to ensure Israelis in Ghana were safe to go about their normal duties.

Mr Katz expressed appreciation to work in Ghana that had been a model of democracy not only within the West African Sub-Region but also on the African Continent. He said there was a window of opportunity for reconciliation and peace in the Middle East and pledged Israel's commitment to adhere to the road map for peace.

The Israeli Ambassador said Israel was looking for future dialogue with the International Community to support her in the efforts to normalise the situation.
