Ghanaian eighth-graders are the worst in math and science, according a new report that compares Ghana students with those around the globe.
According to the report released today in Washington by the nonprofit American Institutes for Research, Ghana was last in science and maths with a score of zero percent in both subjects because Ghana had “no one that could be statistically surveyed as functioning at the Proficient level”.
Botswana, South Africa and Saudi Arabia suffered the same fate as Ghana in maths, while Tunisia matched Ghana in Science. On the other hand, there was not a single state in the U.S. where students were deemed not proficient enough.
The report judged 47 countries, the 50 US states and District of Columbia by the percentage of students who were proficient in math and science testing. Singapore was the highest in math, with 73 percent, while Ghana and three other countries were lowest, with zero percent.
Singapore also had the highest science score, with 55 percent proficient on the testing, while Ghana had zero percent.
Eighth-graders in each of the 50 US states and the District of Columbia trailed their counterparts in Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan in math, and lagged behind Singapore and Taiwan in science
