Ghana records over 2,400 baby deliveries on New Year’s Day

Over 2,400 new babies were delivered in Ghana on New Year’s Day, according a report by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The Organisation reports that a total of 2,411 babies were born in Ghana on 1st January 2018 – a number that represents 0.6% to the total number of deliveries recorded globally on the day.

According a statement by UNICEF, 386,000 babies were born across the world on New Year’s Day, with half of the births taking place in Nigeria, China, India and six other countries.

“Today, approximately 411,000 would be born in Ghana! We work with our partners to ensure that every new-born survives and has a fair chance at a decent life,” the statement read.

UNICEF, however, warned that not all the delivered babies will be able to survive after birth.

In 2016 over 2,000 babies were lost within 24 hours after being birthed and a similar situation is expected this year.

The Organisation, though, is committed to helping reduce child deaths as well as helping provide healthy living for parents and their babies.

UNICEF is currently working on a campaign dubbed ‘Every Child Alive’, which is targeted at making sure that mothers and their babies get quality health care.
