Ghana replaces power transmission systems

Fri, 22 Oct 2004 Source: --

22 October 2004 - Ghana's government has begun replacing the power transmission systems of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to ensure a sustainable power supply in the country.

This five-year project involves changing the lines, transformers and other equipment that facilitated power transmission. It is expected to cost around $200m.

Faulty transmission lines, which have not been rehabilitated since they were laid some thirty years ago, have been to blame for numerous power outages, mainly in the country's industrial and commercial districts.

The exercise, which has started in the industrial and commercial areas and will eventually extend to other areas, comes at a time when the country is striving to be the net exporter of power in the sub region.
