Ghana’s GDP double the growth in Sub-Saharan Africa in 2018 – Bawumia

Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has said that the measures implemented by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has resulted in increased Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth exceeding the average of what was recorded in Sub-Saharan Africa in 2018.

Addressing Ghanaians on the state of the economy at an Economic Management Team town hall meeting at the College of Physicians and Surgeons on Wednesday, 3 April 2019, Dr Bawumia said "GDP growth for 2017 was 8.1 per cent, one of the highest in that year, significantly exceeding the average Sub-Saharan growth of 2.7 per cent. GDP growth remained robust in 2018 almost double the average in Sub-Saharan Africa”.

According to data provided by Dr Bawumia, Ghana’s GDP in 2018 was 5.6 which far exceeded the 3.0 for Sub-Saharan Africa.

He added that that non-oil growth has increased from 4.6 per cent to 5.8 per cent in 2018.

For him, “the strong growth has resulted in an increase in per-capita income which today is at GHS9,864 which is 30 per cent higher than in 2016”.
