Former General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong
A former General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG), Rev. Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, has called for improvements in the conduct of elections in the country.
According to him, even though the country has been praised by bodies like the European Union (EU), African Union (AU), and Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) for past elections which have been peaceful, there is still a lot of work to be done.
He pointed out that Ghana's elections, when compared to those of other countries on the African Continent like Senegal and DR Congo, cannot be said to be the best, graphic.com.gh reports.
The former General Secretary of the Christian Council is reported to have made these remarks while delivering a lecture on peace, organised by the Akuapem Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana at Nsukwao, a suburb of Koforidua in the Eastern Region.
He also said that one of the major issues in Ghana’s electoral process is the monetisation of elections, which he said has made the country’s democracy too expensive.
He added that the monetisation is making it difficult for Ghana’s democracy to mature and also making it difficult for Ghanaians to choose competent leaders to lead the country.
Rev. Dr Opuni-Frimpong, who is also a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Religious Studies at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), also called on all stakeholders in the pending December 25, 2024, general election to ensure that peace prevails.
He added that the violence seen in past elections is not the best and that the 2024 elections present a significant opportunity to reverse the violent patterns witnessed during previous elections.
