Ghana's sovereignty intact - Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has stated emphatically that the Ghana-US deal, which has existed between the two countries since 1998, will in no way compromise Ghana’s sovereignty.

The president, in a livid address to the public on Thursday evening, expressed his shock at the opposition’s intention to deceive the public and “set about so blatantly to confuse people, and go as far as calling for the overthrow of our democracy.”

In his address, the president reminded Ghanaians that “Ghana has built a formidable reputation for its contribution to peace-keeping around the world” and this would not have been possible without the immense contribution of the United States of America.

The Akufo-Addo led government has vehemently rejected claims by the main opposition NDC that a US military base is to be set up in the country.

In fact, these claims have been backed by protests and media appearances, including a press conference held at the NDC headquarters on Thursday afternoon, cautioning the president to be forthcoming with the truth about the alleged deal between government and the US.

The president’s truth, however, turned out to be a blatant denial of any such deal being discussed between the US and Ghana.

The contents of the deal made waves on both mainstream and social media when the opposition NDC leaked what they claimed to be a ‘secret document’ detailing the contents of the deal including a 20 million dollar package to be doled out to President Akufo Addo.

According to the President, the deal has existed through the erstwhile Mahama led government and the opposition’s hypocrisy at the alleged silence surrounding the deal is outrageous.
