‘Ghana’s tertiary students turning to drugs’ –Ex-NACOB Chair

A lot of the Ghanaian youth, especially students of the tertiary institutions are turning to drugs, the outgoing board chairman of the Narcotics Control Board has stated.

According to Naval Captain (Retired) Baffour Assasie-Gyimah, details available to him suggest that more young people are increasingly getting involved in the use of illicit drugs.

“The politicisation of drugs issue in the country is not the best at all, because a lot of our young men and women are turning to drugs, especially those in the tertiary institutions”, the former military officer told Citi FM.

He said his now defunct board made a lot of efforts to depoliticise the fight against drugs.

The 17-member board was dissolved by President John Mahama after a report by NACOB said they collaborated with its UK partners in the arrest of Nayele Ametefeh , the Ghanaian lady was who arrested in the UK for drug trafficking.

The statement was later dismissed by the British High Commission, who stated that NACOB and its British partners have collaborated on several occasions, but there was no collaboration between the two countries in the arrest of Ametefeh.

The President, has however, explained that the dissolution of the board was coincidental with the cocaine saga as it had already expired its term of office.
