Ghana to Buy Russian Helicopters ...

Ghana?s Defense Minister has said that his country would buy a batch of Russian Mi-17 helicopters to support the Ghana Armed Forces peacekeeping operations, Radio Ghana reported on Thursday. However, the number of aircraft to be purchased and the sum of contract were not disclosed.

Ghana?s Defense Minister, Dr Kwame Addo-Kufuor said that his department had completed negotiations with Messrs Wellfind Limited of the United Kingdom, Rosoboronexport and Kazan Helicopters of Russia, to support the Ghana Armed Forces peacekeeping operations.

Answering questions in parliament, the minister said that Ghanaian pilots, flight engineers and technicians were being trained in Russia as part of the contract. He informed the House that the helicopters will be ready for shipment to Ghana by the 10th of next month.

According to Dr Addo Kufuor, an air force technical inspection team is due to depart Accra by the first of next month for the initial acceptance of the aircraft at the factory in Kazan, Russia.
