Ghana to Get $60 Million From Spain

The government of Spain is to provide Ghana with 60 million dollars for the execution of projects of high priority in the country, Mr Kofi Amponsah-Bediako, Assistant Government Spokesman, said in Accra at the weekend.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Mr Amponsah-Bediako said the two governments have already signed a framework agreement and the money would be used to undertake a number of projects to improve the welfare of the people.

Mr Amponsah-Bediako said the projects would include "the Six Towns Water Supply Project" in the Eastern Region, and would involve the development, re-development and expansion of surface and ground water sources.

He named the beneficiary towns as Koforidua, Nsawam, Nkawkaw, Swedru, Anum Boso and Asamankese.

The Assistant Government Spokesman said in addition, there would be the rehabilitation and expansion of raw and treated water pumping stations, treatment plants and storage reservoirs.

The project would also involve the transmission and distribution of pipelines, together with ancillary works, and including the supply and installation of bulk supply meters and the repair or rehabilitation of access roads and security fences.

To ensure that satisfactory works are carried out, Mr Amponsah-Bediako said government would ensure that only items and equipment of acceptable specifications and standards are used.

"This means that performance specifications will be provided for the various systems to be installed or upgraded."

The Assistant Government Spokesman assured Ghanaians that government would do everything possible to ensure that majority of the people get access to potable water to promote good health.
