Ghana to host climate change workshop

Accra, Sept. 18, GNA - The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in collaboration with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, is organising an African Workshop on Adaptation to Climate Change in Accra from September 21 to 23.

The workshop would offer African countries the possibility to exchange information on observing climate changes and assessing their impacts and countries' vulnerability to these changes. A release issued by the EPA said recent droughts and floods throughout Africa had once again shown the continent's vulnerability to climate variability and change.

"They demonstrated the need to assess and plan for the expected impacts of climate changes, which will include the increase of extreme weather events," the release said.

It said the workshop would offer countries the opportunity to share their experiences in planning and implementation of concrete adaptation measures in the areas of agriculture and food security, water resources, coastal zones and natural ecosystem.

"Besides, representatives from African countries and participants from developed countries will participate to discuss available opportunities for collaboration within and outside Africa."

It said representatives from the World Bank, United Nations Development Programme and United Nations Environment programme would elaborate on how adaptation measures could be supported in Africa's overall efforts to achieve sustainable development and reduce poverty.
