Ghana will start processes for bilateral talks with the United Kingdom to renegotiate various agreements following Britain’s exit from the European Union, the West African country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Ms Hanna Tetteh has said.

“Even though Britain has not formally exited the EU, and the UK remains bound by previous agreements signed under the EU, Ghana will immediately start talks with the UK on a bilateral trade agreement”, she said.

The negotiations will focus on migration, and other areas of mutual interest.

Britain voted in favour of exiting the EU on Thursday June 23 with the results showing the ‘Leave’ campaigners winning the referendum with 51.8% as against the 48.2% of the ‘Remain’ campaigners.

This implies that the UK will exist independently and its government will take decisions without the influence of the EU.

Ms Tetteh assured Ghanaians that economic activities between Ghana and other EU countries will be intact irrespective of Britain’s exit. “We have trade agreements with Germany, France, Italy and other countries who are still in the European Union”, she said in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Friday June 24.
