The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Hackman Owusu-Agyeman, has stated that Ghana will join the coalition against terrorism because of its negative effects on the global economy and development.
He emphasied that the tragic attacks on vital installations in New York and Washington last month have affected all countries and a number of significant events meant to address some major global issues.
Mr Owusu-Agyeman was speaking during a courtesy call on him by the United States Ambassador in Ghana, Ms Nancy J. Powell, in Accra yesterday.
He cited the postponement of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, United Nations activities such as the Children’s Summit and the World Food Summit and the activities of airlines, which have also slowed down.
Mr Owusu-Agyeman expressed regret that resources that could have been used for development have to be diverted to tackle the numerous problems that have been created as a result of the attacks.
The Foreign Minister said it is for this reason that Ghana will join the coalition to stop such attacks so that people can develop in freedom.
He was, however, happy with the speed with which the US is handling the situation and commended the American Government for its continued assistance to Ghana despite the events.
On her part, Ms Powell assured Ghana of her country’s continued support.
She said since the incident affected the whole world, it is necessary to mobilise international support against terrorism.
More than 6,000 people are believed to have died in the suicide attack on the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon in Washington on September 11, 2001.
